What you Need to Know Before Enrolling in an MAPD Plan
Serving Florida's Space and Treasure Coasts
Florida’s Space Coast and Treasure Coast are home to a large population of military retirees who rely on TRICARE For Life alongside Medicare. Every Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, some of these retirees are approached about switching to a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan. Before making that change, it’s worth understanding exactly what TRICARE For Life already covers — and what you could give up by adding an MAPD plan on top of it.
On This Page
TRICARE For Life (TFL) is wraparound coverage that sits behind Original Medicare (Parts A & B). Medicare pays first, TFL pays second — and for services both cover, you typically pay $0 out-of-pocket. There’s no TFL premium beyond your Medicare Part B premium, and TFL already includes prescription drug coverage through the TRICARE Pharmacy Program. You can see any provider who accepts Medicare, anywhere in the country, and TFL is one of the only benefits that also covers care overseas.
It flips who pays first
A Medicare Advantage plan becomes your primary coverage in place of Original Medicare, pushing your TFL drug benefit to secondary status.
You lose “see anyone” access
MAPD plans require you to stay in-network. TFL’s biggest advantage — unrestricted provider choice — goes away.
Claims get messier
MA claims don’t automatically cross over to TFL the way Original Medicare claims do, meaning more manual coordination and more chances for a claim to fall through the cracks.
Overseas coverage is at risk
Medicare generally doesn’t pay for care outside the U.S., but TFL does. Most MAPD plans don’t cover overseas care at all — a real loss for retirees who travel or live abroad part-time.
You already have drug coverage
Adding an MAPD with Part D on top of TFL’s pharmacy benefit adds cost and complexity without adding value.
The plan can change or disappear every year
Medicare Advantage carriers can leave a county, shrink their network, or discontinue a plan at the end of any year, forcing you to re-shop during AEP. Original Medicare and TFL never do that — your coverage stays the same nationwide, every year, automatically.
It adds a third plan to manage
Instead of two coordinating benefits (Medicare and TFL), you now have three — with a separate ID card, a separate customer service line, and often referral or prior authorization rules for coverage you already had for free.
Occasionally — if a specific local MAPD plan bundles in extras like dental, vision, hearing, or a gym membership that you want, and you’re comfortable trading network freedom for those perks and handling the added billing coordination yourself. Even then, you keep your TFL eligibility; you’re simply layering cost and complexity on top of coverage you already have for free. In most cases, a stand-alone dental or vision plan fills those gaps more cleanly.
For most military retirees, Original Medicare + TRICARE For Life provides better coverage than Original Medicare + TRICARE For Life + a Medicare Advantage plan — at no additional cost. Before making any change, talk it through with a licensed agent who understands both TRICARE and Medicare.
NISONA works with military retirees and their families throughout both regions. If you’re weighing TRICARE For Life against a Medicare Advantage plan, we can walk through your specific situation — no matter which city you call home.
