What Is Medicare Supplement Plan D?

Medicare Supplement Plan D Florida offers strong, comprehensive coverage that works alongside Original Medicare. Plan D helps cover many of the costs that Medicare does not fully pay — with a comfortable middle-ground premium.

Key takeaway: Plan D covers nearly everything Plan G does — the only difference is Plan D does not cover Part B excess charges. Since excess charges are relatively uncommon, Plan D can be a strong middle-ground option.

  • Medicare Part A deductible ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026)
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayments
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments

Why Consider Plan D?

Plan D strikes a strong balance of comprehensive coverage and broad availability for people newly eligible for Medicare.

  • ✓ Nationwide access to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — no networks or referrals required
  • ✓ Covers nearly everything Plan G covers, aside from Part B excess charges
  • ✓ Fully available to all new Medicare enrollees — unlike Plan C or F, which are closed to anyone newly eligible on or after January 1, 2020
  • ✓ Foreign travel emergency coverage — ideal for retirees who travel internationally
  • ✓ A strong middle-ground option for those who want broad coverage without the added cost of excess-charge protection

Medicare Eligibility — When Are You Eligible?

Medicare has several enrollment periods during which eligible individuals can sign up for coverage. Enrolling at the right time helps you avoid late penalties and gaps in coverage.

  • ✓ You are eligible for Medicare if you are 65 or older, under 65 with certain disabilities, or have End-Stage Renal Disease.
  • ✓ U.S. citizens and legal residents who have lived in the U.S. for at least five continuous years are eligible.

Enrollment Periods — When to Enroll

Here are the primary Medicare enrollment periods and what each one means for you.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

  • A 7-month window beginning 3 months before your 65th birthday, including your birthday month, and ending 3 months after. This is when most people first sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B.
Example: If your 65th birthday is in June, your IEP starts March 1 and ends September 30.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

  • Runs January 1 to March 31 each year for those who missed their IEP and are not eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.
⚠ Note: Enrolling during the GEP may result in late enrollment penalties if you did not sign up when first eligible.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

  • Allows enrollment outside the IEP and GEP without penalty due to qualifying life events such as losing employer-based coverage or moving out of a plan’s service area.
Example: If you retire and lose employer health coverage, you have an eight-month SEP starting the month after your employment or group health coverage ends.
