Key Points
Many people put off buying life insurance because they think it’s complicated or time-consuming. In reality, the process is straightforward — especially when you have an experienced independent advisor guiding you through each step.
Day 1
Assess needs, choose type, compare quotes
Days 1–3
Submit application, pre-underwriting begins
Days 3–30
Medical exam (if required), underwriting review
Approved!
Policy delivered, 10–30 day free look begins
No-exam policies: If you choose a simplified issue or no-exam policy, the timeline compresses dramatically — many applicants receive a decision within 24–48 hours and can have active coverage within days of starting the process.
Before comparing any quotes, get clear on what you actually need life insurance to do. The right answers to these questions will determine everything about the policy you choose.
Coverage amount rule of thumb: Most financial advisors recommend 10–12 times your annual income as a starting point, plus the balance of any major debts (mortgage, loans). A NISONA advisor can run a free needs analysis to give you a specific number based on your actual situation.
Once you know what you need to protect and for how long, choosing the right policy type is straightforward.
Fixed coverage for 10–30 years. The most affordable option for large coverage amounts. Best for income replacement, mortgage protection, and obligations with a defined end date.
Same as term life but with no blood draw or exam. Up to $1,000,000 available. Approved in as little as 24 hours. Slightly higher premiums than fully underwritten — but the speed is often worth it.
Permanent coverage that lasts your entire life. Builds cash value over time. Higher premiums than term but provides lifetime protection — ideal for estate planning and permanent coverage needs.
Small whole life policy for seniors ages 50–85. No exam required. Coverage $1,000–$50,000. Designed to cover funeral costs and final expenses. Premiums never increase.
This is where working with an independent advisor makes a significant difference. Rates for identical coverage can vary by 30–50% or more between carriers for the same applicant — especially for anyone with a health condition.
Important: A declined application is recorded in the MIB (Medical Information Bureau) database and must be disclosed on future applications. Applying through an independent advisor who pre-screens your application helps avoid unnecessary declinations that could complicate future coverage.
Once you’ve chosen a carrier and coverage amount, the formal application is submitted. Here’s what to expect:
Personal information
Name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license, beneficiary information.
Health questionnaire
Questions about your health history, current medications, family medical history, tobacco use, and lifestyle factors. Always answer honestly — misrepresentation can void your policy at claim time.
Occupation and lifestyle
Your occupation, hobbies, and any foreign travel plans — these affect your risk classification and premium.
Authorization to access records
You’ll authorize the insurer to check the MIB database, your prescription drug history (IntelliScript), your driving record (MVR), and potentially request medical records from your physician.
Honesty is essential: Life insurance companies verify health history through multiple data sources. Misrepresentation discovered at claim time can result in the claim being denied and the policy being voided — the worst possible outcome for your family. When in doubt, disclose.
Underwriting is how the insurance company assesses your risk and determines your final premium. This is where the timeline varies most depending on the type of policy you’ve chosen.
Requires a paramedical exam — blood draw, urine sample, blood pressure, height/weight. The exam is performed by a licensed medical professional at your home or workplace at no cost to you. Results are sent directly to the underwriter.
Timeline: 3–6 weeks total
Best rates available
No paramedical exam required. The insurer uses your health questionnaire answers, MIB data, prescription history, and driving record to make a decision — often automatically.
Timeline: 24–72 hours
Higher premiums, faster approval
During underwriting the carrier may request additional information — medical records from your doctor, clarification on specific health answers, or additional lab work. Your NISONA advisor will keep you updated throughout this process and help you respond to any requests promptly.
Once the underwriter completes their review, one of four outcomes occurs:
✓ Approved as applied
You receive the exact coverage at the rate class quoted. The policy is sent to you for review and signature. Your first premium is due at delivery.
⚠ Approved with a rating
You’re approved but at a higher rate class than quoted due to health findings. You can accept the new rate, decline, or ask your advisor to shop alternative carriers.
⚠ Approved with exclusions
Coverage is approved but specific conditions are excluded from the policy. Common with certain pre-existing conditions. Your advisor will explain the exclusions and alternatives.
✗ Declined
The carrier declines to offer coverage at this time. A decline from one carrier doesn’t mean you can’t get coverage — your NISONA advisor will identify alternative carriers or policy types that may still be available to you.
All life insurance policies sold in Florida include a mandatory free look period — the amount of time you have to review your policy and cancel it for a full refund if you change your mind.
Our advice: Read your policy carefully during the free look period. If anything doesn’t match what you expected — the coverage amount, the rate, the exclusions — call your NISONA advisor immediately. We’ll help you understand it and address any concerns before the free look window closes.
For fully underwritten policies, typically 3–6 weeks from application to approved policy. No-exam policies can be approved in as little as 24 hours. Final expense policies are usually issued within 2–3 business days.
Not necessarily. No-exam and simplified issue policies are available up to $1,000,000 and skip the blood draw entirely. If you prefer no exam, tell your advisor upfront and we’ll focus on carriers that offer no-exam coverage for your coverage amount.
Coverage typically starts when the policy is delivered and the first premium is paid. Some carriers offer temporary coverage (a “binder”) while the application is being underwritten — ask your advisor if this is available for the policy you’re applying for.
Yes — but the type of policy available to you depends on your specific health history. Many conditions are still insurable through fully underwritten or simplified issue policies. For serious health conditions, guaranteed issue is always available. A NISONA advisor specializes in matching high-risk applicants to the right carriers. Learn more about high-risk life insurance →
