Medicare & TRICARE

7 Reasons Not to Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan If You Have TRICARE For Life

A quick guide for military retirees on Florida's Space and Treasure Coasts

If you have TRICARE For Life (TFL), you already have some of the best coverage available anywhere — $0 out-of-pocket costs for covered services, no network restrictions, and drug coverage built in. So why do so many TFL beneficiaries get calls every fall about switching to a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan? In most cases, it’s not a better deal. Here are seven reasons to think twice before you sign up.

  1. It flips who pays first. A Medicare Advantage plan becomes your primary coverage in place of Original Medicare, pushing your TFL drug benefit to secondary status.
  2. You lose “see anyone” access. MAPD plans require you to stay in-network. TFL’s biggest advantage — unrestricted provider choice — goes away.
  3. Claims get messier. MA claims don’t automatically cross over to TFL the way Original Medicare claims do, meaning more manual coordination and more chances for a claim to fall through the cracks.
  4. Overseas coverage is at risk. Medicare generally doesn’t pay for care outside the U.S., but TFL does. Most MAPD plans don’t cover overseas care at all — a real loss if you travel or live abroad part-time.
  5. You already have drug coverage. Adding an MAPD with Part D on top of TFL’s pharmacy benefit adds cost and complexity without adding value.
  6. The plan can change or disappear every year. MA carriers can leave a county, shrink their network, or discontinue a plan at the end of any year, forcing you to re-shop during AEP. Original Medicare and TFL don’t do that.
  7. It adds a third plan to manage. Instead of two coordinating benefits, you now have three — a separate ID card, a separate customer service line, and often referral or prior authorization rules for coverage you already had for free.
