A Florida Medicare Supplement policy is a health insurance policy and is sold by private insurance companies to fill the "gaps" in the Original Medicare Plan coverage. Medicare Supplement Insurance policies must follow federal and state laws. These laws are designed to protect you. The front of every Medigap policy must clearly identify it as "Medicare Supplement Insurance."
Medicare Supplement Standardized Plans
All Medicare Supplement Insurance policies in Florida must be one of 12 standardized policies. This allows you to easliy compare the benefits from each private insurance company with each other. In other words, the benefits for Plan C from AARP would be the same benefits as Plan C with any other private insurance company. Knowing this allows you to concentrate on the price and reputation of the Medicare Supplement Compnay, and not on the whether one company has an better plan. Each policy has a different set of benefits. Two of the standardized policies may have a high deductible option. In addition, any standardized policy may be sold as a "Medicare SELECT" policy.
Florida Medigap Insurance policies for people under age 65 on Disability
Florida Medigap policies for people under age 65 and eligible for Medicare because of a disability or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
You may be eligible for a Medicare Supplement policy before the age 65 due to:
- a disability, or
- ESRD (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant).
Medicare Supplement Part A and Part B
Remember, you will get a Medigap open enrollment period when you turn age 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. You will probably have other choices of Medigap policies or be able to get a lower premium at that time. During the Medigap open enrollment period
- you can buy certain Medigap policies from Medigap insurance companies, and
- insurance companies can't refuse to sell you a Medigap policy due to a disability or other health problem or charge you a higher premium (based on health status) than they charge other people who are age 65. Because Medicare (Part A and/or Part B) is creditable coverage, if you had Medicare for more than six months before you turned age 65, you probably won't have a pre-existing condition waiting period.
