Having Medicare benefits is important as you move into the mature market. When you were younger, it was important for you to have proper health insurance coverage. This coverage becomes even more important as you get older. Why? Medical bills might begin to increase if you become diabetic, suffer a stroke or have a massive heart attack. In turn, you could end up making more trips to your physician’s office or hospital. To maintain proper health insurance coverage, consider Medicare Part C – Medicare Advantage
What is Medicare Part C – Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is the combination of Medicare A and Medicare B plans and generally includes the benefits of Medicare D. Therefore, Medicare Part C can offer hospital, medical and prescription medication benefits all in one convenient plan.
Private insurance companies approved by Medicare offer Medicare Advantage plans that provide a more comprehensive approach to healthcare than just Part A or Part B plans alone. Depending on the specific Medicare Part C plan that you choose, you can even receive additional coverage such as dental and vision benefits.
Who Can Receive Medicare Part C – Medical Advantage Plans Coverage?
According to Medicare, there are three basic groups of individuals who may receive Medicare benefits. Available mostly to U.S. citizens receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, Medicare offers benefits to the following population:
- Individuals over the age of 65
- Individuals with disabilities who are under age 65
- Individuals who have end-stage Renal Disease, also known as kidney failure
Medicare Part C – Medical Advantage Plans
Medicare Part C plans are generally set up as networks according to Medicare guidelines. Networks typically provide a list of physicians and hospitals from which you can choose to use. The types include:
- Preferred Provider Organization Plans (PPO) in which you can use in-network and out-of-network providers at your discretion. Prescription drug services can be included in certain PPO plans.
- Health Maintenance Organization Plans (HMO) in which you are required to use only in-network providers. Certain plans could include prescription drug services. Tailored HMO plans called HMO Point of Service (HMOPOS) could allow you to see out-of-network providers.
- Special Needs Plans (SNP) set up much like a PPO or HMO for individuals who need specific healthcare accommodations. Examples include individuals who have conditions such as congestive heart failure or a mental disorder or who might already reside in a nursing home.
- Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA) in which Medicare provides a stipulated amount of money each year and deposits it into a bank account. This, in combination with a high deductible, can create some out-of-pocket expenses but gives you the freedom to see providers of your choice. Prescription drug services are not generally available with this type of plan.
- Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS) in which you choose any provider that has been approved by Medicare and make payments based on predetermined fees. In these plans, you might also receive prescription drug services.
Medicare Part C – Medicare Advantage Premiums
As a recipient of a Medicare Part C plan, you would have the responsibility of paying a monthly premium. This amount covers the Medicare Part B portion and in some cases covers an additional premium depending on your plan. Examples of a typical monthly premium could be $96.40 or $115.40. Higher premiums could ensue depending on your annual income.
