Medicare Part A

It is important to understand the differences between Florida Medicare coverage Part A and B.  Knowing the details before being in medical need is imperative. This is true regardless of whether you live in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, or Kissimmee.

Medicare Part A Eligibility

Medicare, itself, is designed to help senior citizens aged 65 or older and those individuals 65 and under that are disabled and meet certain requirements. People that are in kidney failure or need a kidney transplant are also eligible.  There are several different parts to Medicare including Parts A, B, C, and D.  Part A helps to cover cost associated with inpatient types of care.

What is Medicare Part A

Hospital Insurance Coverage or Part A of Medicare covers costs associated with a hospital stay, critical/emergency room admission, hospice and long term care hospitals. It also covers stays in a skilled nursing facility; however, this does not include custodial or long term care facilities.

Part A also covers items such as blood work, when performed in a hospital, skilled nursing facilities and rehabilitation centers. This is especially helpful for those that may have been injured, or have had a major surgery and requires rehab therapy to get back on their feet and start to move forward into their recovery.

Medicare Part A Deductibles

Deductible:  In 2013 Medicare will pay for all charges for the first 60 days of hospital confinement except the first $1,184. This is the deductible amount that you must pay, or if you have some form of Medicare supplement it may pay it for you.

Medicare Part A Coinsurance

  • You will be responsible for paying $296 for each day of hospitalization that last longer than 61 days but less than 90 days.
  • You will be responsible for paying for paying $592 for each day of hospitalization that last longer than 91 days but less than 150 days.  This 60 day period is referred to as your lifetime reserve days.  It only applies to each benefit period.  The benefit period begins on the first day of hospital or skilled nursing confinement and ends when you have been out of the facility for a period of sixty consecutive days.
  • After 151 days of hospital confinement you will be responsible for all hospital charges.

Medicare Part A covers hospital bills during the first 60 days quite nicely.  The most that you would be responsible for is the deductible of $1184. But any hospital stay beyond 60 days could be financially devastating.  For hospital stays between 61 and 90 days you would be responsible for more than $8490, and a stay of 91 to 150 you would be responsible for charges in excess of $34000.
